PCA9548A
NXP PCA9548A octal 8-channel I2C-bus switch with reset, a 1-of-8 fan-out with voltage translation, in a 24-pin package.
The PCA9548A is an NXP octal bi-directional translating switch controlled through the I2C bus, in a 24-pin package, that fans one upstream SCL and SDA pair out to eight downstream pairs, or channels. Any individual channel or combination of channels can be selected through the programmable control register, so a designer can isolate a section of the bus, resolve an address conflict between eight identical devices, divide the bus capacitance or hot-swap a board without disturbing the rest. The device is compatible with the I2C bus and the SMBus standard, it has an active-low reset input and three address pins that allow up to eight switches on one bus, it powers up with all the channels deselected and it uses low on-resistance switches that also allow a voltage-level translation between the two sides. The translation and the isolation make the part useful where a low-voltage host talks to a higher-voltage section or where a fault in one section must not take the whole bus down. Typical applications include an industrial control board, a server, a networking system and any design that must fan out or isolate the I2C bus. Every device BeiLuo ships is factory-traceable and includes an import declaration, a certificate of origin and a RoHS compliance file. Our FAE team helps you plan the bus and the addressing.
FAE Professional Review
The PCA9548A is the part to reach for when eight devices share an I2C address or when a section of the bus must be isolated or hot-plugged, because it fans the upstream pair out to eight channels and even translates the voltage. Use the reset input and the address pins to place several switches on one bus, and keep the pull-ups and the capacitance in mind. Plan the channel map in the firmware early.

Frequently Asked Questions
What projects suit the PCA9548A?
It suits a design that must fan out the I2C bus to eight sections, resolve an address conflict between identical devices, isolate a noisy or a hot-plug section or translate a voltage between two parts of the bus.
Our FAE team can help plan the channel map.
How do I address the channels?
Write the control register over the I2C bus to select an individual channel or any combination, and use the reset input to deselect all the channels at power-up. The three address pins place up to eight switches on one bus.
Our FAE team can review the addressing.
Is the device genuine and documented?
BeiLuo supplies factory-traceable PCA9548A devices with an import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS file on every order. Stock is normally available and the datasheet downloads from this page.
